Elder Pet Workshop
Instructed
by April Frost
Well Pet Counselor
April will be teaching a workshop
focusing on helping our wonderful companions as they
age by addressing the common health issues that begin
to effect them, such as arthritis, loss of vision
or hearing, kidney, heart and immune system challenges.
I will also address the high
incidence rate of cancer, obesity and dental issues
plaguing so many animals today.
The sad but absolute truth is that both for humans
and animals more money is spent in the last few months
to days to keep them alive for a short time than
was spent during most of their life to promote health
and prevent the early onset of disease. This workshop
will address both ways to help dogs that already
are older and have health challenges as well as hopefully
getting people with dogs who are 4-5 years old to
start now taking steps to promote their pets wellness
into their elder years.
This class will
provide you with information about diet, massage,
acupressure points, the best supplements for various
problems, which herbs to use for various conditions,
how to help dogs loosing their vision to adjust
and prevent accidents for them. Also, teaching
hand signals to dogs, preferably before they loose
their hearing, as well as for dogs that have lost
it. Allergies, hot spots and chronic ear infections
are indications of an already compromised immune
system. You will also learn how to do regular and
thorough health evaluations on your dog so you
recognize early warning symptoms of health changes.
It is so important to treat things in the early
stages rather then when
they are already acute and there is little chance
of making a real difference at that point.
When people see the dogs that live with me they are
amazed at the level of health they have and most
of them were not in good health when I take them
on. Most people think that the dogs they are looking
at are five or six years old. They are usually dogs
that are in their late teens. They are playful, not
over weight, and have good muscle tone and a good
energy level. We are all going to die of something
eventually. My companions are quite healthy up until
the last month or two of their life and then die
of a heart, kidney or liver condition as these organs
just wear out. I firmly believe that it is not about
how long we can keep them alive as it is about the
quality of the life they have while they are with
us.
They give us
so much companionship, unconditional love, and
joy. We are their guardians. We need to due the
best we can for them throughout their lives, not
just spend a lot of money on heroic measures at
the end to keep them with us a few days or weeks
longer. I sincerely hope that this workshop is
well attended. All to frequently in doing wellness
counseling I work with clients dogs in advanced
stages
of illness. We can usually provide some help and
provide the animal with a little more comfort but
it usually is a case of too little too late to make
a major difference.
The workshop will have limited enrollment and the
registration fee is $45.
